We were going to try going to the hospital a little bit later today so we could be there for Connor's handling time. I called the NICU for an update to see how the little man did overnight. His blood cultures came back and it turns out Connor has an infection in his blood. FUCKKKKKKK. I consented to do a spinal tap so they can culture his spinal fluid to make sure he doesn't have meningitis. How much is one little guy supposed to take? I'm so scared to see him today. I feel like I will never get to hold him...its been 5 days since that was a possibility.
Okay, enough of the negativity. We feel so much better after our visit today. He was started on two types of anyibiotics last night and he is already showing signs of feeling much better and being a squirmy worm. Lots of yawning, kicking and arm flailing! He had an ultrasound of his urinary tract because he wasnt producing as much urine yesterday. Everything is normal now and they think that it was just a side effect of the fentanyl he received yesterday to sedate him to reintubate. He is now up to 3 mL of milk every two hours and is tolerating it very well. His ECG and ultrasound of his heart showed that his PDA in his heart was still very small but that his heart looked a bit thickened but they will recheck it again later. They tried to do a spinal tap but didn't get any fluid back so they will just use broad spectrum antibiotics that will fight meningitis IF he has it. More good news- they finally got a PICC line in his left leg and removed the umbilical artery line. This means we are one step closer to holding him! They also put a peripheral IV line in his left arm so that they can give him another blood transfusion because his hemoglobin was a little on the low side last night. All in all, a pretty good turnaround for Connor :) I guess this is why they say that you have to take things minute by minute in the NICU sometimes. :)
