I received a phone call from the NICU just after 7 am this morning. This is the third time they have called me this week. Every time I see "No Caller ID" calling, I hold my breath and answer politely. Connor had a rough start to the day. He stopped breathing at 5 am this morning. They had to bag him (give him breaths manually), sedate him with fentanyl and put his endotracheal tube back in. This will be his third round on the endo tube since his birth. The nurse today reassured us that this is very normal for babies at his age to go back and forth between ventilation methods and he did very well considering he was on the CPAP ventilator for two hole days before he had to be reintubated. The problem with babies this premature is that their lungs are so undeveloped that they want to make them develop by making them work a little on the ventilator. But then the workout makes them so tired that they forget to breathe and also can't grow much if they aren't resting. We are bumping Connor's feeding up to 3ml every two hours starting tonight. He had bloodwork and urine tests and cultures of his blood, urine, throat and nasal passages done to test for infection. This is a precaution because SOMETHING was up with him last night and they want to rule infection out as a cause. He had an ECG this morning to look at his PDA and see if it opened up, is the same size or smaller than it was. Keep fighting buddy. Mommy and Daddy love you and we aren't giving up on you.
